Coleman paid his dues as a monster in ametuer wrestling before coming over to mma. He won a handful of titles and even got to participate in the Olympics (he placed seventh) then he decided to give the ufc a try. When he started MMA he became the godfather of a new style in MMA which has became one of the most used and effective techniques...the ground and pound. The term given to Marks way of taking an opponent down and beating them until they tapped out. It is pretty effective even if you have an opponent who can take a punch...you'll just have to do it longer and win a decision. He came out in UFC 10 and crushed a jean claude van damme look alike, the massive Gary Goodridge, and then handed Don Frye his only loss in 10 fights in the octagon. He returned in ufc 11 and crushed his first two opponents and was left with no one to fight in the finals so he won by default. He went on to crush UFC legend Dan "the beast" Severn in under three minutes before he started a string of losses. He lost to Maurice Smith by decision, lost to Pedro Rizzo by split decision, and lost to Pete Williams by KO. Those fighters are still the top heavyweights in the UFC. After that Coleman went to Japan and fought for the up and coming Pride organization. He lost to Nobuhiko Takada in a fairly controversial "worked" match. For those of you who don't know a "work" is a faked match normally used to make another fighter look good. This time they needed to make the japanese favorite look good for his fight against Mark Kerr in Pride 6. Coleman came back with a vengence and ended up spanking the 6 foot 8 inch 270 pound Brazillian Ricardo Morais as a tune up for his winning the biggest mma tournament ever...the Pride Grand Prix. He beat akira shoji by decision and then won a easy match to fujita (fujita was hurt from the previous fight so he came out and fell down as his corner threw in the towell...the fight took 2 seconds) and then came out and beat the pooped out Igor Vovchanchyn for the biggest title in mma. He sat out for about a year before he showed up again in Pride 13 were he ko'ed Allan Goes. This guys is tough. He used to have a problem with his conditioning but that has been taken care of since he dropped about 10 pounds and learned how to pace himself. Now he is a lean, mean, fighting machine and right now though of as the worlds best heavyweights. One can only hope Pride throws him in with the big boys to really show who is the best.
