Types of Arthritis

Osteoarthritis

  • Cartilage (white stiff tissues on chicken bones' joints) breakdown & joint space narrowing
  • Low pain, ~80% of all people (>75 yrs)
  • High risk: obesity, muscle low, genetic, age
  • Sites: knees, hips, hands
  • Walk: 3 times; squat: 10 times
  • Prevention: good supporting shoes, aerobic & wt. training, healthy, medication

Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Women, 20-40
  • High activity, low pain
  • Warm & stiffness at joints
  • Sites: all joints
  • Not rheumatism

Gout

  • Episodic swelling of joints
  • Sites: toes, ankles, knees
  • Very painful
  • Uric acids deposits in ears and joints
  • Males & old women
  • Causes: medication, aspirin, high-protein diet, high alcohol

Rheumatism

  • Many forms, less pain, long-term
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Trigger finger

Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Repetitive strain injury
  • Increased pressure on nerve at the wrist
  • Numbness & pain at night in the first 3 fingers
  • Feeling of swollen fingers, w/o swelling
  • Prevention: stretch & flex fingers, alternate repetitive tasks

Trigger finger

  • Due to overuse
  • Finger click / lock up

Prevention

  • Exercise, Warm-up
  • Oils
  • Diet: take more of what & avoid what in what period
  • Modify work environment, make it suit us
  • Reflect, Release, Rest, Relax
