Before the NCAA adopted its current division structure, teams were divided into University (major) and College (minor) divisions, according to the schedules they played.  Although the precise year the Bulldogs entered the College Division is disputed, they rejoined the major college ranks in 1973.

Instead of playoffs, the NCAA annually sponsored four regional College Division bowl games from 1964-1972.  From 1964-1970, the Midwest regional game was the Pecan Bowl in Arlington, Texas; the game moved to Wichita Falls, Texas in 1971 and was known as the Pioneer Bowl.

[The name "Pioneer Bowl" was later used by an event in Atlanta.]
