Letters

Mme. de Volanges,

I had the hardest time finding out where you were staying here in this dreary, cold country where we find ourselves exiled. But now that I have, I hope you can spare me the kindness of a few moments of your attention. I find myself in London and rapidly reaching the end of my resources. There are very few posts my Order can give outside of France these days as their power is weakened considerably.

Yet I do have a few skills I could use to the benefit of myself and others. I understand that you and your daughter are both here now. Would not the girl benefit from additional music lessons? After that, when she needs my sevices no longer, would you kindly be a reference to me to other families here in England? I ask only that I may support myself during this trying time.

I realize I do not deserve your patronage. My fees for lessons would be modest, just enough for lodging and meals. Please be so kind as to write back to my address in London.

At your service,

le Chevalier Danceny

Chevalier Danceny,

It pleases me that you were about to find your self in London. I under stand that the Catholic Church is populate here and that orders such as yours, suffers for it. I feel for you and all those of your order.

As such I would be more then glad to employ you to further educate my daughter in music. To this end I would like you to come to my residents on Thursday next, to you begin insurrection. We will also arrange the mater of your payment.

Although I do not know many people who would be in need of music lessons, would be also glad to recommend you to those I know who are in need of your serves.

Mme de Volanges

Mme de Volanges,

I shall be there without fail. Does she have her instrument with her? If not, I can make inquiries into one that can be rented or borrowed. Until Thursday next then,

Your servant,
