Ann Smyth N.T (RIP) The first ever secretary of the camogie club back in 1986, Ann passed on her love and interest in the game of camogie, first as a staff member and then principal of St. Marys N.S. Collinstown. Ann also played comagie as well as teaching the skills of the game to the students of St. Marys Collinstown very successfully. She was a member of the Lough Lene Gaels team defeated by Delvin in the 1988 Junior B camogie championship final. Her untimely death following an illness borne with great courage, on Thursday November 2nd 2006, was a cause of great sadness to everyone involved with the club and residents in the wider locality. A beautiful cup, the Ann Smyth Memorial/Perpetual Cup was generously donated by Anns husband Oliver, and family to be played via an underage camogie match. On Sunday July 20th 2008, the combined U/14/16 camogie teams of lough lene gaels and brownstown played for the right to win the beautiful cup. That match was won by Lough Lene Gaels. Margaret Boland Margaret was the first ever Chairperson of Lough Lene Gaels Camogie Club back in 1986 and was a very popular and capable administrator. She worked well alongside Ann Smyth and was a tireless fundraiser for the club in its infancy. Margaret was of the belief, correctly, that it was important that great detail, time and effort should be spent coaching the basic skills of the game if the club was to make progress. Lough Lene Gaels Camogie Club entered a team into adult competition in Westmeath for the first time in 1987, in the Westmeath Junior B Camogie Championship. Margaret actually lined out in at least one match in this particular championship. The match in question was versus Moate, a fixture played in the grounds of Carmelite College in Moate. Margaret kept goal in a team that defeated Moate by a margin of fourteen points. It would be fair to say that Margaret has made a very positive impact in the history of Lough Lene Gaels Camogie Club. Eilish Gavigan Eilish served the club during the course of the 1990s in the position of Chairperson. She proved to be very capable administrator during the years that she held this post. One area in which Eilish excelled, was that of fund raising. Eilishs daughter Veronica is an excellent camogie played and has given great service to various Lough Lene Gaels and Westmeath Camogie teams. Eilishs commitment and dedication has been a great help to the club. |
