Gandalf was deemed the wisest of the land when Galadriel when he entered the world of Middle Earth many years ago. He has laboured non stop for two thousand years to put an end to Sauron's reign. Gandalf has always been fond of hobbits, and when he knew Bilbo had found the one ring, he knew a hobbit would be strong enough to with hold it's power. It was Gandalf who persuaded Bilbo to give up his ring to Frodo.
His great power, wisdom and determination make him one of the most important people out of the fellowship.
