Longwave Reading Festival 08/23/02
Longwave's recent sold out shows in New York was crammed with celebs - including their rather
more regarded mates The Strokes, around whom flocks of young ladies gathered in blatant disreguard
of the evening's headliners. If they'd paid attention, they might've seen something else they liked.
Longwave dump the punkish retro cool of their plans in favour of big tunes and bid hair (their only resemblance to The Strokes is the follicles - they're a whole band of Fabs). Today's early afternoon slot finds them in epic mode, fashioning broard sweeps of classic rock bluster and lugubrious, long-winded atmospherics. They're more effective when going at it fast and loud, but a few delicat, acoustic moments are fairly fine, too. People who have wandered in hoping for a second Strokes may be disappointed, but signs are that Longwabe will soon be making a mark of their own.
