Linux Mandrake has always been a popular Linux distribution. The basis of it is Red Hat's version of the OS, but it has been customized, and had bits added/updated by the developers at MandrakeSoft. This latest version seeks to make it even easier for people to migrate to Linux from Windows 95/98. As touched on above, Linux Mandrake homes in completely on the linux-newbie market. It includes tools for you to safely run Linux and Windows 95/98 on the one machine, in dual-boot function. The only problem with this is that is does not have the utilities to run Windows 2000/NT alongside Linux, which means that if you have 2000/NT you will need to shell out for different booting software. However, besides this, Mandrakesoft have created an award-winning tool to help you safely install Linux on your system for first time users. It is by far the best looking installation utility out of all the Linux distributions, and is also very easy to use, and provides on-screen documentation on almost all the choices you have to make. However, despite Mandrake's best efforts, installation is still a little daunting for absolute newbies. And once you have your system up and running, it is just as easy to change any settings and re-configure your machine, thanks to MandrakeSoft's excellent DrakConfig tool, which is a very handy GUI front-end to all other installation/configuration tools. Also included is a brilliant tool, which lists all the RPMs you have not installed, and has some information on them, which is very handy for installing new packages that you might not have chosen at the initial stages. As well as all this excellent configuration software, MandrakeSoft have bundled some very competent office software, such as Sun's StarOffice, a complete and very useful office suite. Also bundled is AbiWord, which is a word-processor based on MS Word, something which will help make first time users feel at home. Reviews 'r' Us Verdict: In my opinion this is the best Linux distribution available for Linux. It has an excellent installation tool, is very easy to use for beginners, and is just as powerful as most other distributions. However, poor technical support, insufficient paper documentation and lack of support for Windows 2000/NT stop this from becoming a classic.
