TJ’s Skating Tapes Trading List

UPDATE!!! October 28, 2007

This list of figure skating tapes is chronological (as well as I can arrange it, anyway), and has eligible and pro competitions as well as ice shows and specials listed. All of the tapes on the list are original copies that I tape from, except for the ones denoted by (copy). My preference is to trade - something from your list for something on mine. I stopped doing tapes "for cost" but I do know that sometimes people don't have anything to trade with me, or are unable to make copies of tapes. I have obtained copies "for cost" myself, and know what a joy it can be to finally get a competition, show, or special event that I've wanted to view for years! So recently I experimented with a "trial balloon" and it has worked out so far, so I will list some new ground rules for those who may wish to obtain a copy of something from me. First, I will list the rules for trading, since that is my preference and whoever wants to trade with me will be "first in line".

Here is my Wish List of items I would either like to have or to upgrade.

Here are some TAPE TRADE GUIDELINES and information for trading tapes with me:

***My tapes are in VHS format and some of my original copies have commercials in the broadcasts, but others do not. Be forewarned that I no longer really have time to edit out commercials, so the copies will be exactly as I have recorded them, with or without commercials. On a personal note, I don't really mind receiving items with the commercials still intact, because I've received several things where parts were "cut off" in the commercial editing and I often prefer to receive the entire program/event intact, especially if it's older coverage.

***I do all of my taping on brand new tapes: MAXELL, SONY, TDK, occasionally JVC or FUJI brand (when I can find them) and I expect the same in return. I trade in SP or EP mode, depending on the events I want and their lengths. I will make yours in SP (2 hrs to 2 1/2 hours capacity) or EP Mode (6 to 8 hours capacity, depending on the tape) upon request. I trade by number of hours and by number of tapes - for example, if the events you want take, say 2 tapes in SP mode I will probably ask for 2 tapes in return. But if the events take, say 12-16 hours in EP mode then I will probably ask for either 2 tapes in return of events in SP mode or 2 tapes of events in EP mode for myself. It varies with the trade and what someone wants me to do for them and what they have to offer in return. I’ve done it both ways, and even once mixed and matched the tapes I wanted in SP and EP mode- it’s pretty flexible.

***Please DON’T stick the labels to the tape itself!!! I have my own labeling system in place for any tapes you send me. So, please put some kind of *removable* label on it, either a "Post-It Note" or something similar on the tape box so that I can identify it. I have received tapes where the person put the label(s) on the tape in an effort to be helpful, but peeling them off again ruined a couple of nails so I would appreciate labels the way I requested very much, thank you!

I have given the rules for TAPE TRADING, now I will list the rules as promised if you wish to obtain a copy of an event from me. This is still on an experimental basis and I may have to cut it out after a while, but I will try this for a while, for the reasons I stated before.

1. First, if you find an event you would like to have, please contact me - but only after reading the following rules, otherwise I'll have to disregard your request!!!

2. I won't accept ANY form of payment. I must state that emphatically off of the top. If you wish to receive a copy from me, please understand that I don't have time to cash money orders, checks, etc., which is why I stopped doing "for cost" in the first place!

3. If you wish to have a copy made of an event, please do the following after contacting me and telling me what you want me to copy for you:

Send a brand-new blank tape in a mailer envelope, with enough stamps for return postage enclosed. Usually 6-7 stamps is enough for one tape. I will provide the return mailer envelope if you do this much. Please do NOT enclose a check or money order for the shipping! I can't emphasize this enough!

4. Also, in cases where I am being provided a tape, I can do only one tape at a time, whether you wish to have several events on one tape with EP mode or one event with SP mode, the limit is one tape. You can send me different tapes for different events, and set up each one with me, but I'll accept only one at a time. If I'm sent more than one tape at a time, in one package, I'll have to return it so please do keep this in mind!

5. Those who are trading with me have first preference in promptness, but I will get to your copy as soon as possible, and will keep you notified of progress status.

These rules may seem a bit strict, but my time has been limited for the past year and a half. However, I do want to share some of the very good footage I've obtained over the years so that's why I'm trying to work in making copies for people who send blank tapes to me, and the amount of stamps needed for shipping - on an experimental basis for now.

Ok - on to the rest now!

*** I DON'T do compilations in tape trades, or in the "provided tape" experiment I just described!!!

***I don't do the ones which are listed as "pro copy" or are commercial tapes in the "provided tape" experiment - only for trade, and even then on a very limited basis. See further details HERE.

*** I usually ship by Priority Mail or first class mail in trading. I ask that you do the same. I have sent some people their order by Priority Mail only to have them ship my items by Media Mail. I’m willing to take the time and expense for this, and expect the same in return. If you absolutely can't ship by Priority Mail (or the equivalent, if you're in a different country) I ask that you pack the tapes as well as possible. If I send someone more than two tapes I usually use a box, with the tapes packed in newspaper or packing paper and wrapped in shipping "bubble wrap". For two tapes or less, I use a mailer envelope - padded if possible, but if I have to use a regular one I always make sure the tape(s) are wrapped in bubble wrap to prevent damage in transit - or I use a mailer box like you can get at the post office if I'm sending out only one tape.

*** I will get the tapes done as quickly as possible. It depends on the number of tapes and events requested, and how much editing is required. Sometimes the turnaround time is a couple of days, sometimes it takes a week - I will try to make as informed a guess as possible as to how long your request may take. And for those trading I would ask the same in return - I appreciate good communication and knowing that we're "on the same page"!!!

***If you have any questions regarding anything on this site, please feel free to e-mail me. Also, if you're inquiring about a trade or are interested in obtaining a copy of something through the "provided tape" experiment I described, please specify in your subject line. I've gotten a lot of spam in my e-mail lately, and am likely to delete an e-mail unread if it's from someone unknown and without the specific subject listed in the header!

***I do this for fun, and because I love skating and seeing skating both “then and now” and because there are events or competitions I’ve wanted to see but don’t have a copy of. I hope that whoever visits this site has fun too!
