...Sailor Ceres...

Quartet Member
In the manga, CereCere is always the one who addresses the Inner Senshi with the most challenging comments and threats. She is bold and straight forward, although at times has a more giddy side to her when she is around the other quartet members. Her colors favor pink and her outfits reflect upon this. She wears a bikini with a short skirt around the bottoms that are pink, as well as pink laced shoes. When CereCere performs as a Dead Moon Circus member in the manga, we see her as a trapeze artist.

Sailor Senshi
When the Asteroid Senshi are revealed for the first time, in the manga, Sailor Ceres is the one to step forward and tell the story of how they came to be with Nehelenia. (You can read her comments in the quotes section.) Her leadership qualities are very clear. She is the leader of the Asteroid Senshi and her power is equal to Sailor Venus. The similarity with leadership explains the power. Venus is the leader of the Inner Senshi, and Ceres the Asteroid Senshi. They both are sometimes not even noticed as being leaders as Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibimoon are often considered to be the leaders instead. However, as shown in the manga, more so than the anime, Venus and Ceres are indeed the leaders of their respected groups.

Asteroid Information
Ceres is the largest asteroid, or minor planet, found in the belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. This month viewers can find it at the bottom of the "teapot" of Sagittarius. Look for it one binocular field south of Mars. At magnitude 7.8, Ceres outshines even the brightest of the background Milky Way stars. When Ceres is at its closest, it is bright enough to see with the unaided eye. This month, however, binoculars are needed to see this 1,000 km wide asteroid.

Ceres is about half the diameter of Pluto. It was the largest known asteroid until the discovery this summer of an object at least 1,200 km wide in the Kuiper Belt beyond the orbit of Neptune. Ceres is spherical in shape with a metallic core covered by a mantle and crust, just like a planet. Its rotation period is 9 hours, and it orbits the Sun in 4.6 years. Discovered on the first of January in 1801, Ceres is named after the Greek goddess of agriculture. (source)

Because the asteroid of Ceres is the largest asteroid in the asteroid belt of our galaxy, the mily way, this could be why Naoko chose Ceres to be the leader of the Asteroid Senshi/Amazoness Quartet in BSSM.

Mythology
Demeter is the daughter of the Titans Rhea and Cronus, and sister to Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades - the three brothers who ruled heaven, the sea, and the underworld respectively. Demeter represents the earth's fertility and abundance, as well as the many nurturing foods that humans cultivate with her help. Demeter is also the goddess of plenty. Her presence presides over everything that grows. She gives man the sickle and the plow so that he can live off the earth, which she makes fertile with fruit and grain.

The poignant story of Demeter and her daughter, Persephone, is one of the most profound and moving in all Greek mythology. Persephone - the greatest love of Demeter's life - was Demeter's daughter by her brother Zeus, who was thus Persephone's father and her uncle. One of Persephone's other uncles, Demeter's gloomy brother Hades, god of the underworld, fell in love with his niece and asked Zeus for permission to marry her. Zeus knew Demeter would not consent to the marriage - so inseparable was she from her daughter -- so he agreed to help Hades abduct Persephone.

An entire year passed, during which, because of her grief, Demeter let everything on the earth wither and die. Nothing grew; there was no food and nothing to harvest. Zeus sent all the gods to implore her to restore fertility on the earth. When all had failed to move her, he relented and insisted that Hades let Persephone return to the daylight world. Hades could not disobey, but he refused to give up Persephone entirely.

It was well known that anyone who tasted the food of the dead would be bound to return to the underworld. Persephone, in her excitement to return to her mother, forgot this for a moment and, after having not eaten a morsel during her confinement, accepted some pomegranate seeds from Hades before her departure. And so she was doomed to spend one-third of the year back with Hades, during which time the earth would lie bare and fallow and bleak. The rest of the year, she was free to be with her mother, during which time the earth would bloom with flowers, fruits and crops. For at least part of the year, Demeter brought abundance back to the earth. (source)

Demeter is the goddess's name in Greek mythology. Ceres is the reference in Roman mythology. Both of the stories are exactly the same and relate to the same person. Naoko simply wished to use the Roman reference for BSSM.

Astrological Impact
The Ceres asteroid represents the rhythms in a woman's procreation cycles. In her role as mother, the Ceres woman treasures family heirlooms. The biology of life cycles and female passages are within Ceres's domain. (source)
