Lyle Coutts, a D&E Recreation Management Major, has had many opportunities to take leadership roles both in outdoor related events and in clubs and organizations on campus. Lyle's experience in the RMTO course, Wilderness Experience, provided him a solid background in the outdoors while simultaneously enhancing his leadership abilities. Here's Lyle's take on the Wilderness Experience class:
"We had to opportunity to converse with the other [students] not only about land navigation, as demonstrated here, but also in areas like cooking, campsite selection and other important skills. In this class we all got a chance to take charge. We spent most of the semester learning skills inside and outside the classroom during outings, lectures and demonstrations. Our final trip in the wilds of the Otter Creek Wilderness was a culmination of our learned skills in the class which included basic outdoors skills, equipment selection, land navigation, nutrition and cooking, risk management and safety, and many more."
