Nokia Review - Part II

After 1 full week of heavy usage (testing). My conclusion for Nokia N95:

Phone: Good phone, strong reception and clear sound. Not much problems as a phone but ..... (see Problems below)

GPS: Bad. The navigation is too slow to react if you change route. The first time satellites connection also very slow (takes about 1 minute or more). Have not try sending GPS location to others.

Symbian OS: No complaints except slow in loading application. I guess is the CPU problem more than the OS problem

Camera: Start up of camera software is slow but the quality of the photos are acceptable therefore no issue here. Same goes to video. So far it is the best camera phone I tested/played.

Web browsing: With my bluetooth keyboard (Thinkoutside), is great for web browsing on wifi. If you normally visit html site, then is good. If you have flash or other format website, then is not so great as most of the site I visited does not allowed me to enter. Most modern website normally check or endorse Internet Explorer 4 and above browser, if such web site, then the phone will not able to visit it. The site I visited are BBC, Nokia, DBS, etc will move me to the mobile version. Avantgo is not compatible with Symbian S60 version 3, so those interested in Avantgo will have to visit avantgo website (get unlimited data package, else when you see your bill you will be in shock - Nokia shock)

MP3 - The sound on headset is great, I feels it is better than my Creative Zen MP3 player. The good thing about this phone is that it uses the normal minijack, which means, I can plug directly into any speakers or earphone. I tried it with my FM transmitter and result is acceptable.

Problems:

1. Phone hangs when I answer or make phone calls while listening to music/mp3. Not sure where the problems. My 2 cent guess is the phone do not have enough resources to handle too many tasks. If I on the GPS, music and answer a call, most of the time after the call the phone reboot itself.

2. Battery - this phone is battery hungry. If I turn on the 3G services, GPS, Wifi and MP3, the battery last about 2 hours (in short as per the advertisement, 2 hour talk time). If I turn off all unnecessary options, the battery last about 4 hours. I have not tried watching movies or play games yet.

3. OS - As mentioned above, not sure is the OS or CPU problems. The phone hangs if I have multiple application running. The maximum applications you can run at any single time is 3 software. I have the phone, worldmate, MP3 on most of the time. If you have more than 3 software running, when you switch from one software to another, the phone will hang. I installed most of my additional software on the microSD card and free the on-board memory (150 MB) for OS. I will download the latest patch and test the phone.

Summary:

Good phone. GPS is great for current location and nearby place of interest (such as petrol station, shopping centre, hotel, etc).
