Nokia N95 - Usage Review (Part 1)

First the packaging:

- Comes with the set (of course)

- Stereo headset

- Screen protector

- Leather casing

- Battery charger

- Manual/User Guide

- 1GB Micro SD

- Nokia PC Suite CD

- Nokia Map and cities CD (more on this later)

The handset:

My set is maroon in color (the shop do not have it in silver - which I wanted). Anyway, is still quite good looking (the maroon looks like black).

Top: Nothing much only the ON/OFF button

Left: Speaker, Mini jack (for stereo, mic, and video) - can plug into any standard speaker which is a plus point to me, Micro SD card

Bottom: Power connecter, mini USB connector

Right: Speaker, zoom in/out button, play button, snap button for camera

Front: 1.5" X 2.1" Screen, mini camera, light sensor, speaker, and buttons

Back: 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens (2.8 - 5.6) Slide push down: Next, Play, Stop, Previous buttons (for multimedia) Slide push up: Standard alpha\numeric keyboard

The OS

The set preloaded with Symbian S60 series 3 OS. OS is quite the same as other Symbian S60 Nokia phone (eg. N70, N73, etc). Please note that software for Nokia 6110 is not compatible (how I found out - because when I install AvantGo - the OS said so). The unit comes with 150MB. Try not to install anything in it as it will slow down the phone.

Navigating:

I still trying to get use to manual navigating as I am used to touch screen. Have not been using non-touch screen phone for a long time. Is was easy to navigate from menu to menu (wished it was touch screen). Data entry takes a little longer to get used. I have the predictive text on (T9 mode).

Have not sent that many SMSes.

Camera:

As mentioned is a 5 megapixel camera, so photo quality should be better than my current phone (never really take photos from the phone). A new software call Lifeblog will log all phone calls, sms, photos, video, etc and you can upload it to your blog website. Don't need to key again.

Another plus point. You can turn on camera mode by switching on the len protector.

Multimedia player:

The multimedia software will be turn on when. Sound quality using the phone speakers are not acceptable but still clear enough to listen to MP3. Not advisable to use because you can plug in any speakers using the mini speaker jack.Bass not too great but is acceptable as a MP3 replacement.

Never really test the movie, cos have not convert any DVD to mpeg4 format.

GPS:

The phone is built in with GPS receiver. I guess it is using the older SiRF chip. It can detect 5 satelites and detection is very slow for the first time. You must side up the screen and face the keyboard toward the sky (takes about 30 - 60 seconds for first time registration). After detection, you must still face the keyboard the sky else you will not get any GPS signal. You can tilt it 45 degree for good view on the screen and good GPS signal.

In order to use the GPS, you must first install MAP into the phone. Please install it on the Micro SD as some maps are quite huge. The map CD that comes with the set have 5 cities (Singapore, Jakarta, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Manila). The promotion code can be used to activate 2 cities. So by natural choice I selected Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

The MAPS software is only map (similar to Google Earth) - if you want to navigate (like those car GPS) you need to purchase it. The prices is breakdown into 7 days (SGD 15.00), 1 year (SGD 150.00) and 3 years (SGD 250.00). I purchased the 7 days for testing and charged it to the bill - it comes in 3 sms which each cost me SGD 5. The navigation will download data using GPRS from some server.

So in short - GPS is good for current location. if you use it for navigation, it will be expensive (unless you have unlimited GPRS usage). I think my this month phone bill will be high :D

I guess I will only use the GPS as position only.

The cheaper way to use the GPS is download google earth from Google (of course, where else??). In case, you do not know the website:

www.google.com/gmm (you must use the phone to download)

The phone is also comes with wireless lan. Anyone need to know the MAC address of the phone?? I have the code but somehow forgot it. I have it writen someway, just need to find it.

Summary:

Phone wise is a good phone, easy to use (if you used to Nokia)

Bad:

GPS - slow and expensive to use. If you want a navigation gps, get a gps I guess no other bad point for the phone.

This is my short summary. Should you need my longer review, you have to pay for it. I need it to sponsor my R&D
