Bred for a leadership role, the commanders of the Army of the Republic led regiments of up to twenty thousand clone troopers into battle.

Distinguished by the yellow markings on their armour, clone trooper commanders were given special training by the Kaminoan cloners to fufill their advanced roles. They were bred with extra capacity for tactical thinking and coordination, and were given all the traits of a regular army commander. On Kamino, the clone commanders were scouted in the training areas, and taken to a special academy for advanced training.

On the battlefield, clone commanders were often assigned to whatever command centre had been set up, though they also took part in the battle itself if needed. As the commanders sometimes gave control of their squads over to commandos or even Jedi Generals during the Clone Wars, they didn't see as much action as their troops. They would often direct the battle from an orbiting Acclamator assault ship, or Republic bases in the area. During the Battle of Geonosis, clone commanders were stationed in the forward command centre with Master Yoda, or in the clone assembly area.

Clone trooper commanders carried all the standard equipment and weaponry that their troops carried, though they also had access to advanced sensor stations and rangefinders. They were given slightly more independence than the regular troops, though only enough to allow for extra tactical thinking. No clone trooper was ever in the position where he would question orders.
