Mystic China Errata

It should be noted that without certain rulings being made available from Erick Wujcik and/or Palladium books, a true errata will not be possible for Mystic China. This document therefore is an attempt to correct the known errors in the best way possible. Much information in this document does come from official sources, either missing material garnered from other books published by Palladium Books or through correspondence with Erick Wujcik to reconcile the differences and vagaries with the material. Other information is drawn from the author’s understanding of the system, game mechanics, and from other sources of knowledge pertaining to the material within Ninjas & Superspies. Changes in language usage, particularly those regarding Japanese come directly from years of research and are backed by a multitude of sources. Whenever possible and applicable, optional information will be included to iron out the rough spots of the system and update it to follow current Palladium Megaversal System mechanics. Regardless of whether or not the optional system updates are included, the corrections and additions of missing material WILL change the page count for the book, this needs to be taken into account, especially for table of contents purposes.
I should note that I am willing to discuss the changes and reasons for them.

Author’s general notes: In place of every reference to ‘martial art forms’ or ‘forms’ replace the use of ‘forms’ with ‘styles’ this minor change is due to both martial art styles and martial art kata being considered ‘forms.’ Change all references to “Katas” with “Kata” (the word is the same in singular or plural form). Change all references of “Zenjoriki” to “Zenjorike”. (This is per Erick Wujcik’s stated preference.) I should note that I’m not going to touch the use of either “Zenjoriki” or “Zenjorike” as a “Japanese” word, since it’s not really important for game playability. I will note that Erick’s use of “Xian Chi” in Mystic China positively precludes the use of either “Japanese” form since the ideograms would translate into Japanese as “Sen Ki” (though “Senjoriki” is another possibility).
Correct all spellings of “sub-machinegun” and “machinegun” to “submachine gun” and “machine gun”.
In case I missed any, correct all spellings of “traveller” with “traveler”, “traveling” with “traveling”, “calibre” with “caliber” and any other British spellings of words that need to be corrected to American English.

Page 9: For the Skills Listed by Category, insert Research under Chinese Technical Skills, after Language Dialects.

Page 11: Insert the following information after the Language Dialects skill:
Research: Training in the use of methods, techniques, and locations, for finding information, including public records, libraries, federal information services, data bureaus, interviews, surveys, demographics, trade journals, clipping services, computer services, and legal searches. This skill is helpful in locating information about people, places and things. The game master will ultimately regulate the availability of accessible, known information regarding a particular subject. In some cases, there may be a ton of history and information, while, in others, very little or nothing at all (which may reveal something by its sheer lack of info). The research skill simply gives characters access to available data. Base Skill: 50%+ 5% per level of experience. G.M. NOTE: A good rule of thumb is to let players investigate/research something as much as they want, but keep the game moving along. If no information is available, find out where they are conducting research and say something like "Despite the help of the clerk, and three hours of research, you still find nothing (or nothing unusual)." If the characters) wishes to keep looking, let him, but quickly click off the hours; "Another hour and still nothing." If another player conducting research elsewhere says "What do I find out at the City County Building? Make the answer a quick "Nothing" or "Something quite surprising." and tell him (perhaps in private). Do not drag out the research aspect, but do consider a reasonable length of imaginary game time. Likewise, if the information is common knowledge or easy to locate, fast forward through what might be a couple hours research and tell the character what he has found. ANY CHARACTER CAN ASK QUESTIONS AND DO RESEARCH! However, the research skill will reduce the amount of time by half and the character is trained to notice relevant data that an untrained character is liable to overlook. Thus, for the truly mysterious, secret or difficult information, have the character with the research skill try to uncover it. Only roll to determine success on these difficult or hushed up bits of information, including addresses, unlisted telephone numbers, car license plate numbers, obscure and suppressed data.

One could also use a combination of spells, including Fill Object with Chi (2nd level) and Ignite Positive Chi (7th level)."

Wood used in this manner can not be re-filled with Chi and used again.

Under the spell Create Vajra, change the of the spell, under the stats block to read “See Below”, make the recharge cost equivalent to the stat-block listed cost.
Add PPE and Chi cost for Five Point Vajra, probably have to entirely redo list.
Use the cast times listed in the description to create the vajra (i.e. one week per pair of points).
Use the Cost listed in the stats for the spell for the PPE cost of creating the vajra (i.e. 50 PPE per pair of points).
Use the casting time required in the stats as well as the cost listed in the stats to determine charging time for the vajra, per pair of points. (Yes that would mean that almost 150 PPE would be 'wasted' filling a nine point vajra, but if you look at the numbers, they really make no sense in the first place...the PPE values up to a four point vajra make sense, but the chi values don't, after that the chi values make sense (sort of), but the PPE values don't...and you'll note there's no listing for a five point vajra either...).

Pages 147-148: Replace the description of the few Yama Kings with the following:
Chin Kuang Wang: King of the First Hell. Ruler of the Living Dead and those who have unfinished business in the mortal world. Chin Kuang's realm includes the Terrace of the Mirror of the Wicked, the Hsieh Ching Tai, where the condemned are able to see images of all the victims of every wrong they have ever committed.

Chu Chiang Wang: King of the Second Hell. Often known as the "Sleeping Yama King," Chu Chiang seems completely disinterested in the affairs of his realm. The Second Hell is also known as the “Cold Hell.”

Sung Ti Wang: King of the Third Hell. Rigid, rule-bound, and studiously loyal. Sung Ti is the perfect model of a Confucianist Yama King.

Wu Kuan Wang: King of the Fourth Hell. Often called the "Judge," Wu Kuan is the most learned of the Yama Kings. This Hell contains the "Lake of Foul Blood."

Yen Lo Wang: King of the Fifth Hell. The foremost watcher of the world of mortals among the Yama Kings. Yen Lo has always been interested in creating new servants (the Copper Pigeons were his creations) and he is now taking a keen interest in computers and other aspects of modern technology. Included in his realm is the village of Wang Hsiang Tai, where the damned can see the misfortunes that follow their relatives after they have gone.

Pien Cheng Wang: King of the Sixth Hell. Sometimes called “The Librarian.”

Tai Shan Chun Wang: King of the Seventh Hell. Second in command of the realm and heir-apparent to Chuan Lun, the supreme ruler. One remarkable thing about Tai Shan Chun is that he is one of those who came up through the ranks. At the time of the foundation of the Yama Kings, Tai Shan Chun was a low-ranking demon, one of the hundreds of thousands elevated from the previous version of hell. Taking advantage of the situation, with a combination of hard work and occasional treachery, Tai Shan Chun managed to pull himself up into the rank of Demon Overlord. Eventually, through masterful guile, Tai Shan Chun managed to overthrow the former 7th Yama, simultaneously gaining the support of the other nine Yama Kings.

Ping Teng Wang: King of the Eighth Hell. Called the "Mad" Yama King.

Tu Shis Wang: King of the Ninth Hell. Tu Shis is the ruler of the Accidental City, the residence of the White Lead Leopards.

Chuan Lun Wang: King of the Tenth Hell. Chuan Lun is the supreme ruler of the Hells of the Yama Kings and is also known as "He who turns the Great Wheel of Transmigration." Included in his realm is the great capital city of Feng Tu, where 24 administrative offices determine the fates of all departed souls.

Using bare hands, with no weapon at all, has the penalties of -2 to strike, -4 to parry and -4 to damage.
Fans as Weapons for White Jade Fan
In spite of the name, "White Jade Fan," fans can be made of paper, bamboo, silk, iron, jade, plastic, or just about anything else. So long as the fan is in the classical form, such that it can be snapped shut into a rod, and opened with one hand into a wide arc, it can be used as a weapon. Here are a few possibilities:
Tourist Fan. Made of paper, plastic, or other inexpensive material, often imprinted with famous landscapes, religious sayings, or the images of flowers or pretty girls, these are readily available at any market, shop or store in all of China. Cost is usually $1 or less. Unfortunately, they have only 1D4 S.D.C., so they are easily broken in combat.
Bamboo Fan. Slats of seasoned bamboo are carefully assembled into a fan that is unornamented, functional, and makes a good weapon. Cost: $1.50. The fan has 3D6 S.D.C.
Silk Fan. Covering the wood or bamboo slats are panels of beautifully embroidered silk, generally either in abstract patterns, or stitched with ancient ideograms. Note: Up to 16 needles, usually poisoned, can be planted in a silk fan, so that the user can flick them out towards opponents, one or two at a time. Cost: Varies from $2.50 for those without any needles to flick, to $25 for those with 8-16 needles. Needles without poison do one S.D.C. point of damage. The silk fan has only 2D4+4 S.D.C.
Iron Fan. An ancient traditional weapon, this fan is both ceremonial and functional from a military point of view. Sharpened edges and points give it a +3 to damage. Cost: $30-300. The metal fan usually has 2D6+24 S.D.C.
Jade Fan. Incredibly valuable, made of precious jade, and requiring dozens of hours from the finest jade workers, it shows the utter arrogance of the White Jade Martial Artists that they prefer to enter into combat with such a delicate and precious object. Cost: Widely varies depending on the actual type and grade of Jade used (too complex to get into here). Rough guidelines are 1D4x100 for Nephrite Jade (any color). For Jadeite use the following numbers:
Imperial Green Jade 1D10x1 million
Glassy Green Jade 1D6x1 million
Lavender Jade 1D4x1 million
Apple Green/New Mine Jade 1D6x100,000
Spinach Green Jade 3D6x10,000
Moss-in-Snoe Jade 2D6x10,000
Red Jade 1D6x100,000
Yellow Jade 1D6x10,000+40,000
White Jade 1D10x1000+10,000
Gray/Black Jade 1D6x1000+4000
The above prices are for untreated or "A" jadeite. Bleached or "'B' jade is about 1/10 of the value of a piece of equivalent 'A' jade" and "'C' and 'D' jade are about 1/10 to 1/50 of the value of an equivalent ''A' jade"

Weapon Katas. There is a lot of confusion as to what the Pa-Kua Lance and “Eighteen” Staff really are. To date, I have yet to see definitive answers as to what these weapons are. Most like the “Pa-Kua Lance” is a simple spear (Qiang) and the “Eighteen” Staff is an 18 Chi Rod (Shuo or Ma Shuo). What is known about Choy Li Fut is that they use 36 weapons, typically listed with Cantonese romanizations (in paranthesis), however, I’ve included Pinyin romanizations of Mandarin as well (in brackets). Note that Choy Li Fut practitioners should only get to select three of these to replace the three weapon kata listed, with more being available through Special Kata selections.
