Making Boomerangs

Description Make 5 different boomerangs that work from Cardboard
Setup and Resources

Requires:

  • Cardboard
  • Pens to trace
  • Scissors
  • Paints etc to decorate
Make Copy one of these shapes onto cardboard for a stencil, trace around and cut out. Shape 1 can use thinner cardboard but shapes 2 and 3 require thicker cardboard. For Shapes 1-2-3:
  • Fold a flap along the dotted line - make the fold neat and sharp.
  • Rest the boomerang on the tips of your fingers and flick with a paddle-pop stick. It should fly in a loop and return to you.

For Shapes 4, 5

  • Best launched from a book larger than the boomerang. These should also loop and return.
Problems
  • spinning without returning - flap not large enough or cardboard too thick
  • tumbling in flight - flap bent wrong way or boomerang not flicked hard enough
  • Spins too slowly and falls - card too heavy
