Dr. E. Temple Harris was a surgeon present at the first terrible battle of Tanga in November 1914 where 8,000 men, mostly Indian troops, were beaten in three days by 1,000 African askaris and German officers under the formidable Colonel Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck.

Ras Kazone, November 2, 1914

Temple was one of five doctors tending the hundreds of casualties in the "Red House", a planter's house in Ras Kazone, commandeered as a field hospital. He and four colleagues were left behind with the wounded as the British fled, a broken force.
Temple wrote to his brother Tatham over two and a half years as a medical officer stationed in East Africa.

264 pages, 26 black and white photos, 7 colour photos (taken in 1999 by the author on a visit to Tanga where she successfully located the Red House in Ras Kazone), 3 maps.
