From October of 1979 to August of 1980, Steve was an original member of St. Elmo's Fire, a musical group. Steve played the mellotron, mini moog, percussion, flute and vox. In the spring of 1980, the Cleveland Express, an underground free weekly newspaper, described their music as polished and well presented. They played tight progressive rock with a few covers of King Crimson songs. See the photo to the right of the band with Steve at the far right.

On January 17, 2007, the Plain Dealer carried the following death notice:

Stephen J. Stavnicky, age 55, passed away Jan. 15, 2007. Dearest father of Stephen, Sean, and Soren; loving son of the late Stephen and Jean (nee Nejedlik); beloved brother of Larry (Linda), and Jean (Kenneth) Whitehead; loving uncle of Larry and Michael. Family will receive friends at Ferfolia Funeral Home, 5386 Lee Rd., Maple Heights on Thursday, Jan. 18 from 4-8 p.m. Funeral Parlor service 8 p.m. Private Interment, All Saints Cemetery in Northfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
