Postimerkkeily, eli filatelia, on yksi maailman suosituimmista
harrastuksista. Postimerkkeilijöitä, eli filatelisteja, on kaikissa eri
yhteiskuntaluokissa.

Stamp collecting, in other words philately, is one of the most popular
hobbies in the world. Those who collect stamps, in other words
philatelists, are members of all society classes: school kids, students,
officials, chief executive officers, top athletes, royalty, presidents,
shop assistants, the unemployed etc.

Maailman ensimmäinen postimerkki ilmestyi Isossa-Britanniassa vuonna 1840.
Kyseistä postimerkkiä kutsutaan nimellä "Penny Black" (musta penny) ja
merkissä on kuvattuna kuningatar Victorian profiili. Vähitellen muut maat
seurasivat Ison-Britannian esimerkkiä: osa Sveitsin kantoneista ja Brasilia
julkaisivat postimerkkejä vuonna 1843. 1840-luvulla merkkejä ilmestyi myös
Yhdysvalloissa, Mauritiuksella, Bermudassa, Baijerissa, Belgiassa ja Ranskassa.

The world's first stamp was published in Great Britain in the year 1840.
The stamp is called the Penny Black and it shows a profile of Queen
Victoria. Gradually other countries followed the example of Great Britain:
some of the Swiss cantons and Brazil published stamps in the year 1843.
In the 1840s stamps were also published in the United States of America,
in Mauritius, in Bermuda, in Bavaria, in Belgium and in France.

Suomen ensimmäiset postimerkit ilmestyivät vuonna 1856. Näiden nk.
ovaali-/soikiomerkkien nimellisarvot olivat viisi ja kymmenen kopeekkaa.
Sinistä viiden kopeekan merkkiä painettiin 138 500 kappaletta. Punaista
kymmenen kopeekan merkkiä painettiin 442 400 kappaletta.

The first stamps of Finland were published in the year 1856. The face
values of these so-called oval stamps were five and ten kopeks. The blue
5-kopek stamps were printed 138.500 pieces. The red 10-kopek stamps
were printed 442.400 pieces.

Filatelia voidaan jakaa useaan eri osa-alueeseen: perinteinen filatelia,
postihistoria, ehiöfilatelia, maksimifilatelia, aihefilatelia, leimamerkit,
lentoposti jne. Aloittelevalla postimerkkeilijällä on toisin sanoen useita
eri vaihtoehtoja, joiden joukosta hän voi valita ensimmäisen keräilyalueensa.

Philately can be divided into several parts: traditional philately, postal
history, postal stationery, maximaphily, thematic philately, revenue stamps,
aerophilately etc. There are lot of different possibilities to choose from when
you decide to start the collecting of stamps.

Filatelistin on oltava kärsivällinen. Esimerkiksi laajan postimerkkikokoelman
kerääminen voi viedä aikaa useita vuosikymmeniä. Joskus voi olla vaikea
löytää jotain tiettyä postimerkkiä kokoelmaan, vaikka kyseisen postimerkin
luetteloarvo olisi vain muutaman euron. Tällaisten vaikeasti hankittavien
postimerkkien löytäminen kokoelmaan tuottaa onnistumisen tunteita
postimerkkeilijälle.

If you are a philatelist you have to be patient. For example collecting a large
collection can take the hard work of several decades. Sometimes it can take
years to find a certain stamp to your collection, although the catalogue value
of that stamp is only few dollars or pounds. To find this kind of difficult stamps
to collection gives the most pleasure to stamp collector.

Filateliassa hienointa on sosiaalinen kanssakäyminen muiden keräilijöiden
kanssa. Postimerkkikerhojen kokouksissa voi keskustella muiden filatelistien
kanssa mistä tahansa aiheesta (ei siis vain filateliasta), ostaa ja myydä
postimerkkejä, oppia koko ajan uutta postimerkkeilystä jne. Monet
postimerkkikerhot, ainakin täällä Suomessa, järjestävät jäsenilleen matkoja
postimerkkinäyttelyihin - jopa matkoja ulkomaille.

The social contact between other collectors is what makes philately so fulfilling
and nice hobby. You can talk with other people about everything (not only about
philately), buy and sell stamps, learn all the time more about stamp collecting
and just have fun in the meetings of stamp clubs. And many stamp clubs, at
least here in Finland, arrange journeys for their members to big stamp exhibitions -
even journeys to the foreign countries.

Internetin avulla voi olla yhteydessä muihin filatelisteihin, ostaa,
myydä ja vaihtaa postimerkkejä, opetella käyttämään tietokonetta apuna
filateliassa, kertoa muille ihmisille postimerkkeilyharrastuksesta jne.
Postimerkkeily on loistava harrastus!

And of course the World Wide Web is an important way to be in contact with
other enthusiastic philatelists, to buy, sell and exchange stamps, to learn how
to make use of computers in philately, to tell other people about your hobby etc.
Philately is a hobby for a lifetime!
