| Prologue: The Three Souls A soul floated through the abyss, unaware of anything but itself. By some strange force, the soul was pulled in two directions and split into two souls. Yet the souls stayed close, feeling most complete when they were together. A connection still existed between them, as if by a delicate, yet unbreakable thread, and each felt the most comfortable being with the other. Yet even being dependent on one another, the two were very different. One, more dominating than the other, decided that the two would never be apart and vowed to look after the other soul forever. The second soul, quieter and more timid, felt this was a good plan. However, after a while, it became apparent that they could not stay forever as they were. They were to enter the real world as separate beings, though they would retain the special connection they shared. When the time came, the second soul resisted, frightened of what the world held and of losing that which made it whole. The first soul would not leave its fearful counterpart behind. It held back, but both felt the urgent draw to move on. *We need to go* the first implored the second, heading again for the new life waiting for them. *No, dont leave me* the other whispered. The first led the second soul and promised *I will always protect you.* Then, worried that the shy soul would stay behind, the stronger one forced it to go first, then followed, ensuring that they would awake together. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~* As the souls became people and the years passed, those people became less aware of their dependence on each other, but as long as the souls were connected, the two knew they were whole. Until another soul came along. This one had originated on its own, but was seeking the one that would complete it. It found that one soul in the gentler of the twin souls. But though the gentle soul loved the new one and wanted to share everything with it, they did not have the same connection as the two who used to be one. Yet the souls truly loved each other and called out for one another over and over again. Only in moments of great emotion could they even come close to touching. But they knew that if they could just touch once, they could do it forever. No matter the consequences, they continued to try. And then one day they did, and that changed everything for all three souls. |
