JBJ
: That's correct.
FMX : So let me give the first question, 2
questions in one. First of all, 5 years ago what made you say "alright,
let's go & do a bit of solo careers ahd other things" and then now to this period
what made you say "'right, it's time let's get back together" ?
JBJ : Well, the "These Days" album
came out in '95. It's the tour that took us into the fall of '96 which time we
said let's go off and do solo records for 2 years. But we delayed of Richie's
supporting his album and a little bit delay of the company, PolyGram was sold to Seagram
and became a part of the Universal team which delayed the record further. And
the only good news that I came out with all the mess is 60 new songs to pick from.
So when we got it right, we went back in the studio.
FMX : So you actually knew that it was 2 years
of period but that was just got delayed.
JBJ : It got delayed simply because the solo
records and we've been gone doing something else.
FMX : Did you enjoy your bit of solo career
and did Richie enjoy his as well ?
JBJ : Yeah. We need to do that.
I think the magic of the band that why we've been so successful for so
long is that we're not relying on just the band. I'll be able to my movies,
solo records, soundtracks, whenever the feeling is. So when you come back to the
band, you're really excited about it. You wanna go full of fresh to work for
it.
FMX : Ok, now I heard of that
qoute on the other day from Richie, he said that "Bon Jovi, now, we're not gonna be
splitted out". Is that right ?
JBJ : I think that is somebody who has just
been in the interview recently said. I guess it's true that the band is
beyond the point of ever breaking up. I thought that's pretty whileworth.
It's true. We're not relying on it.
It's not the only thing in your life. There's no reason to break up.
Earlier on our career , the first 4 albums we've done one right
after the other. The tour would be 40 or 60 months of pieces and then we would
be right back in the studio. When we started to take a breathing, doing the
thing like the "Young Guns" soundtrack and Richie doing "Stranger In This
Town" then we came back with "Keep The Faith", and we had something new to
say. Then with "Keep The Faith", "Cross Road", "These
Days", in '92 '94,& '95, I needed something else to say so we ranaway and Richie
did "Undiscoverd Soul" and I did "Destination Anywhere".
So when we come back, we have something new to say and the result is
"Crush".
FMX : OK. So "Crush" the new album
comes out in the end of this month here....
JBJ : The end of MAY!
FMX : Ok let's move slightly back from that a
little bit. You've been doing movies as well. Do you get kickass of that
just the same as you do music ?
JBJ : You know I'm like an old man walking on
this street. I've got so many experiences and that I would dangerous. [ laughs
] But when I walk on the movie street, I'm like a 17 years old boy doing new
tasks. ???????????
And "U-571" which is this week the No.1 movie in America.
This is my first big movie so in the funny way, you feel like you're 21
again.
FMX : So you enjoyed the movie.
JBJ : Very much.
FMX : Would you say that maybe one day you'll
say ok now I've had enough of the music business that's the end of us...?
JBJ : I shall not. I need to
write songs. I need to express myself in that way. One of the great
differences is that I didn't write the dislogue I'm speaking. That's the first
of every record and every songs. I've always written the songs or if I didn't,
I'd collaborated on. So now when you're not speaking the dialogue from the
script that's not yours, you're taking on someone else's words. It's like
singing in someone else's band. There's a lot of differences in there.
So I don't see how I ever quit song-writing.
FMX : Ok. Would you expand that maybe to
say let's write more songs for movies and then say let's do a completely movie work maybe?
JBJ : I did that already with the "Young
Guns" soundtrack 9 years ago. We continue to write songs for movies that
they're fit. I think the only thing that will change is the 150-show tour.
This year there will be 50 shows.
FMX : So you'll take it a little bit easier on
the lineside.
JBJ : On the lineside.
FMX : Ok. The new album comes in
the end of May....May29th! It's called "Crush". Ok when did
the project particular get going. 2 years after you'd written songs ?
JBJ : The writing of songs is 2 years now or
it's just a little bite lower than 2 years. We had a long period to write the
materials because of the selling of the lebel, because of Richie's record is being in some
way delayed; we wanted to tour when I didn't tour for "Destination Anywhere".
The writing process has an opportunity that to really get it
right. And when we went to the studio, we went so easily , so
smoothly because we knew we had the materials.
FMX : OK Let's get in to something from
"Crush". The first single I think it's officially release over here
next week.
JBJ : Correct.
FMX : We do have a copy of the album,
"Crush". So let's get to hear the first single. Any word you'd like
to give of the first single ?
JBJ : I think it's the right first single and
it's called "It's My Life". I think it's rather anthemic.
It relates to everyone regarding if you're in Thailand or if
you're in New Jersey. People wanna take control of their own lives.
It's called "It's My Life".
< PLAYING IT'S MY LIFE>
FMX : It's My Life, the first single from the
album, "Crush" by Bon Jovi. The first time of being together for now for 5
years. On the line we have Jon Bon Jovi. Jon...back again. I
heard that now a few times.
JBJ : That's the 1st time I heard it on the
radio.
FMX : Really?
JBJ : First time!
FMX : I heard that a few times. I
really get into it finds me that it's easy to sing along to.
JBJ : Were you standing on your shirt around
jumping your DJ hhh???????
FMX : I wasn't. I was trying
to be sensible.
JBJ : I see.
FMX : The new single gives so much energy
there.
JBJ : Yeah. I think it's a part of it.
I think the idea was that we wanted to have this kind of rock'n'roll record.
It's funny that I don't realize what the record is about until
almost 2 years after. The fact when making I thought "These Days"
was a rather happy record, retrospectively, I realized we enjoyed the record immensely,
but lyricly it's pretty DARK. Now with this record, through out the process,
whatever we do, we wanna make sure that it's not DARK. It's gonna be fun.
We wanna have fun again. And fortunately, I believe that we did
what we said we were going to do.
FMX : OK so you've got a new album.
Is it completly "new" to the fans ? So would you
gonna say "this is something we have never done before" ?
JBJ : No. I think what I can say
is ... a band that you're familiar with...the song writting that you've been familiar with
yet. It's very contempolary and it's production-valued. I think it's
rather anthemic and lyricly the overview is that people who wanna take control of their
lives when they're comfortable on their shoes. It's of confidence.
