Title: Traveling the Oregon Trail              Subject Area: Social Studies Unit: Nebraska
Description:
This lesson is designed to integrate technology and a graphics tablet with the curriculum study of the Oregon Trail during a Nebraska Social Studies Unit.
References:
Textbook:  Oregon Trail Software Guide & Oregon Trail Student Booklet

Preparation / Introduction:
Students will need time to explore and practice using the graphics tablet.
Students will be given a student workbook to complete during their journey west.

Instructional Method:
Students will individually work to complete and answer questions in the student workbook. The teacher will assist students with historical information, trail map locations and labels, and strategies for a successful journey. For the first journey, students will be required to complete a handwritten journal. Students will learn to export and print the electronic trail log. Students will orally compare the two different logs during large group discussion. The students will use these logs to complete questions 1-6 on page 26 (Planning the Trip) of the workbook.  For the second journey, students will use the electronic trail log to answer the final questions on page 29 of the workbook.  Students will then take a final journey to answer the questions on page 43 (End of the Trail) in the workbook. Students will be required to complete map work of the trail which includes locations of towns, forts, and rivers. Students will use the graphic tablet to create a picture to depict a location or event experienced during the journey on the Oregon Trail.

Coordination:
The computer teacher and the regular classroom teacher will collaborate and integrate this technology into the regular social studies, art, and language arts curriculums.

Assessment:
Students' workbooks were created from the Oregon Trail II Software Guide. These will be collected and evaluated. Students will be assessed on cooperation, summarizations, map work, and art.

Other Information:
The Oregon Trail II Guide that came with the school version of the MECC software was the main focus of computer and technology integrated materials. Students viewed a video that was
a re-enactment of the pioneer's journey to Oregon City before creating their pictures. The teacher created a bulletin board display using a United States wall map. The map portrayed  the states of today and the Oregon Trail with labled locations.
