Global Youth Service Day (GYSD)

This is a global event celebrated annually in last week of April. It started in the USA  and later was demystified in other countries. At the moment 117 countries are involved in the process. In Kenya, KYF is National Lead Agency and has been involved in the process since the year 2000. This program is picking well in Kenya and it is focused on mobilizing youth year round to contribute to community development through volunteering  and recognizing the role young people are playing in development as well as provides opportunity for youth mentoring by adults.

The program is being implemented by KYF and it’s partners in Nairobi, Western Kenya and soon Coastal Region. The focus is to make the program country wide by recruiting organizations to act as focal points in all districts in Kenya to coordinate GYSD activities at district level. KYF is focused to mobilize resources to strengthen the program in Kenya.

International Seminar for Rural Youth Work- Herrsching, Federal Republic of Germany

This a biennial training seminar for Rural Youth Workers taking place in Herrsching,  Munich in the Federal Republic of Germany. This program is involving Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Bavarian Farmers Union, Bavaria Farmers Training Center- Herrsching and Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry- Germany. KYF sent the first participants to the Seminar in the year 2000 who benefited from the training and now are involved in running the programs of KYF. KYF was given the mandate to be identifying Professional Rural Youth Workers in Kenya to participate in the future training. KYF is also to coordinate the process in East Africa in collaboration with Uganda and Tanzania. This program is important for KYF because the Action Plan has been designed to strengthen the program both locally and regionally.

·         KYF intends to launch Post Herrsching Trainees Alumni in Kenya

·         Mobilize resources to implement projects aimed at empowering rural youth

·         Sustaining the nomination of qualified Rural Youth Workers to the future seminars

·         Initiating International Rural  Youth Exchange Program between the North and the South

·         Strengthening regional network and collaboration in youth work in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa.

KYF is still committed to the process and is focused to mobilizing resources to strengthen this program. The trust that is built in KYF by Seminar organizers is a very big boost and KYF will continue to nominate only qualified Rural youth Workers to the future Seminars.

International Year of Volunteers 2001

This program was initiated by United Nations General Assembly and dedicated the year 2001 as the year of Volunteers. KYF being a volunteer organization was involved right from the beginning to the end of that year. KYF led the youth process and organized various activities to highlight the important roles being played by volunteers. KYF was part of the National Coordinating Committee comprising United Nations Volunteer Program Kenya Office, Ministry of Culture, Heritage and Sport and NGOs/CSOs in Kenya. The national theme was “Volunteering to Eradicate Malaria in Kenya”. KYF worked hand in hand with IYV2001 National Coordination Committee in preparing for various activities. KYF was honored for a commendable work by IYV2001 International Coordinating Committee through a certificate of appreciation to the organization. Volunteering being our selling point, KYF is still designing programs aimed at promoting Volunteering among the youth. KYF is aiming at mobilizing resources to implement the activities recommended during IYV2001.
