PROFILE Ramli Sarip is an artist who can shift effortlessly from his energetic metallic numbers on his electric guitar to swaying ethnic renditions with traditional instruments such as the gendang and rebana. The recipient of 1998 COMPASS Artistic Excellence Award has indeed a fascinating career path, from establishing himself as a heavy metal singer and musicians with the rock band Sweet Charity - a household name in this region - to a well respected producer, composer and legendary artist. Sweet
Charity's break came in 1979 when Warner Music released their first
album, which sold more than 50,000 copies, excluding the uncontrollable
rate of piracy. Together with the band, Ramli revolutionised the local
rock scene with their own brand of rock and roll, with most songs
incorporating Malay fold elements. In fact, minus their long hair
and rock artist image, Sweet Charity was accepted as a folk rock group.
Tracks from the second album such as `Kamelia', `Musibah', `Zakiah'
and `Pelarian' became instant hits. These numbers have remained Sweet
Charity classics so much so that fans have forgotten than some were
cover versions. Started their career in early 1969. Performed nightly
at Ocean Club, naval base in Sembawang to entertained the foreign
sailors and British soldiers before released of their debut album.
The group disbanded in 1985 when individual members decided to move
on in different directions, with different objectives. Each had a
different outlook in life after the success and began on individual
career paths. But for Ramli, knowing exactly what he wanted, stayed
on in music. Much of Ramli's solo career took off in 1985, with an
album entitled "Ramii Sarip" that focused on themes related
to humanity, peace, heritage and life's twisted yet glorious paths. The history of Ramli achievements and his musical philosophy were documented in a four CD box-set produced by Warner Music in 1994. He is the first local artist to bv given such an honour, which included the production of limited sets of a collector's edition. This
change had listeners questioning his new path, wondering it Rarnii
was trying to "dakwah" (spread religious beliefs) through
his music. But Ramli proved his critics wrong with the debut of his
latest album, Kalam Kesturi, where he showed his mattle in producing
quality world music for the people. Ramli has blossomed to be become
a true voice of a generation. "To
me, what is important when creating a work, is to create good quality
music for the listeners. My music is clear, music that conveys eastern
feelings together with strong Malay vibes", says Ramli. "I
create music with good and clear intentions and Iam determined to
carry it out in the best possible manner. I try to pen good lyrics.
It is up to the listener to categorise my music into the different
categories, be it dakwah song, or Nasyid or just entertainment."
In 8th and 9th July 2005, a sell-out concert was held to celebrate his 35 Anniversary with Warner Music and launched of special edition album to commomerate with first solo concert, Zaman The Concert held at Istana Budaya. AWARDS

Ramli Sarip was first popular with his group called Sweet Charity in the late 70s. Sweet Charity was among the few bands that revolutionised the local rock scene - this Singapore-based group continued to rock the nation with their brand of rock and roll music. They were once dubbed as the Deep Purple of Singapore, Sweet Charity released its self-title debut album in 1979. But it was not until a year later that they become a household name when their second album, Sweet Charity-Pelarian Track from the album such as Kamelia, Musibah, Zakiah and Pelarian became instant hits and today, they have become Sweet Charity classics, so much so that fans has forgotten that some of the numbers were cover versions. Having released seven albums together, members of the band went their separate ways when lead vocalist Ramli Sarip decided to go solo. Soon after Ramli left, guitarist Rosli Mohalim reported as saying; "We feel empty. We feel as we can't move without him". Echoing his sentiments, drummer Rahman Sarbani said; "We feel completely lost without him. He was our leader. Wherever he went and whatever he did, we just followed him. He was our strength and we admire his great discipline". Indeed, Ramli Sarip was the backbone of Sweet Charity. The amn himself popularly known as Papa Rock, had this to say about his departure; "Our music was becoming a bit stagnant. I wanted us to explore ourselves as individuals, find our strengths and gain new experiences. Each members has his own strong points. From 1989 onwards, Ramli went solo and to date has cut 8 solo albums with an average sale of 100,000 original copies per album. The highest sale achieved was 250,000 original copies. Ramli has also proved himself to be popular among fans ranging from youngsters, teenagers, middle aged and the elderly. He render heavy rock, soft music, traditional Malay songs and English numbers.
