Selangor State Mosque - The Blue Mosque

The Selangor State Mosque is known as Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. It is reputedly one of the most stunning structures in the country. It is also one of the symbols highlighting the supremacy of Islam and the sovereignty of Moslems in Malaysia.

As visitors approach the mosque, they are welcomed by the awe-inspiring double-layered space frame Dome soaring up 350 feet above ground level. This dome is 170 feet in diameter and becomes the largest Religious Dome ever built by the world to date. To match the majestic size of the Dome, four Minarets were built. There are positioned at the four corners, guarding the Dome, and rising over 460 feet, making them tallest in the world. Decorative Islamic calligraphy dominates the edges surrounding the dome and the main prayer-hall, while the interior architecture exhibits ethic Malay design elements. Sunlight filtering through the blue stained glass of the mosque renders a bluish ambience to its interior, evoking a sense of peace and serenity.

The mosque is presently the largest in South-East Asia, able to accommodate a maximum of 24,000 people. Employing a blend of Islamic and Malay architecture, the mosque occupies three floors. Offices, conference rooms, receptions rooms and classrooms are located on the ground floor, the Main Prayer hall on the first and the Gallery on the second floor.

The State Mosque is Majestically sited on a raised ground in the town centre of Shah Alam, the state capital of Selangor Darul Ehsan. Shah Alam is a well-planned satellite town consisting of commercial, administrative, cultural and residential areas. Surrounding the Mosque are the New Municipal Council Tower, The State Library, the Museum and the beautifully landscaped Lake Gardens of Shah Alam.

The Mosque does not only excel in its structures and craftsmanship, but also in its call for prayers. The mosque administration always makes the mosque a centre for religious activities, spreading Islamic knowledge, education and catering for social norms.
