| It was a cold, dreary morning when Sanglith's small clutch chose to hatch. The candidates stood in a loose circle, regarding the eggs hopefully. The firs tegg rocked, cracked, and finally revealed a struggling blue dragon. The hatchling righted himself, ignored the candidates, and went to his mother. He quirked a smile, and said to everyone, I'm not going to bond. My name's Setth. With a cheerful flick of his tail, he walked away to feed as two eggs hatched at once. A green and a dark brown dragon with white wings were the next two to hatch. With a glance to her brown-white brother, the green dragon announced their decisions. My clutchmate and I shall not bond. She said. I am Ziath, he is Onlorenth. With that, Ziath trotted off to join Setth in feeding, and after a short pause, Onlorenth stood up and joined her. A blue-white hatchling sat on the sands, ignoring the candidates, rapidly growing worried that none of the dragons were bonding. He watched with a bored expression on his face as a bright white wing emerged from a neighboring egg, followed by a dark green head. The green-white turned to her mother and crooned. I am Strewth. My bond is not here yet. She stated, and she too trotted off to join her unbonded siblings. Strewth came to a halt halfway there, however, and kicked up a cloud of sand as she stopped suddenly in front of the blue-white. She chirped curiously as he looked up at her. Come on, Saveth, don't tease the candidates. She reprimanded him playfully. Eyes whirling slowly with red, the blue-white hatchling turned away from her, growling. Go 'way. He said sulkily. His smaller green-white sister-the smallest dragon yet of the clutch-snorted and butted her head against his side. Come eat with me, Saveth! Saveth creeled in annoyance. You're not my bond, you can't tell me what to do. Strewth sat back and regarded him seriously. No, but I'm your sister. She insisted, and she grabbed the blue-white's tail in her mouth and tried to pull him towards the kitchens. So come on! Grudgingly, Saveth got up and followed his sister, grumbling all the way. During this exchange, a large brown dragon had hatched and was sitting a short distance away, listening to them. Upon their exit, the brown dragon rumbled amusedly and stood up to follow them. He was stopped at the exit, and gave his name, Ranuroth, before following in his smaller sibling's footsteps to the kitchens. The last medium-sized egg rocked, gave a writhing shudder, and split straight down the middle to reveal a hissing ball of black and white. Ruby eyes glared as the white-winged black dragon flexed the sharp claws on its front paws, regarding the candidates coolly. Filthy creatures. A harsh, feminine voice snarled in their minds. Beasts such as yourselves are not worthy to grace me with your blemished presence. Your kind is fit only to adorn my claws with rubies of blood. My name is Dreadeth, humans! Heed it well. A shocked kind of silence pervaded the air as Dreadeth exited the sands. Once the black-white dragoness had disappeared from view, a low buzz began as people conversed with each other about the unusual hatching. The candidates looked dejected as they all trudged off the sands. A'cuin and Rea, the riders of the parents, glanced worriedly at each other before A'cuin spoke up. "Do you want to tell Weyrwoman Teah, or shall I?" |
