Daren looked up anxiously as the healer came out of the room where Kita lay. The Weyrhealer, as they called him, looked at the boy and smiled. "The poison's been neutralized. She'll be fine now, though it will take a while for her to recover."
Daren sighed in relief. "Thank you."
The healer smiled again. "I think you would like an explanation of where you are?"
Daren nodded, and the man continued. "You are currently in Darkling Dawn Weyr, on Pern."
At Daren's confused look, he sighed and launched into a short explanation of Pern, its dragons, and their Weyrs.
"I'll send C'rin to show you around while your friend recovers." He said as he finished the explanation.
C'rin turned out to be a dark-haired young man, with a large blue dragon. "Hello!" He said, waving to Daren. "I'm C'rin, and this big blue lump behind me is Rigelth." He said, as he patted the dragon's head affectionately.
One of the first places C'rin led him to were the Hatching Sands. "This is where the dragon eggs are laid, and guarded by the mother until they hatch."
A beautiful light rainbow-colored dragon lay on the sand, her bright white wings shielding her eggs from view.
"That's Hyperith," C'rin said. "A rainbow-white."
"She's beautiful." Daren grinned.
C'rin conversed silently with his dragon.
Well, Rigelth, do you think he has a chance of Impressing?
Yes. I think he should stand, Rigelth started.
"Rigelth says he thinks you may be able to Impress one of the eggs." C'rin said. Daren's eyes brightened hopefully.
-But not here. Rigelth finished.
C'rin stopped. "What?"
I do not think he should stand at Darkling Dawn. However, I hear Draco's Inferno needs candidates...
C'rin sighed, turning to Daren "Okay, Rigelth says you should go to another Weyr, instead." He said, and shrugged.
Daren frowned, hiding his disappointment. "Alright then, what's this other Weyr?"
"Draco's Inferno. Apparently there's a female blue's clutch there."
Daren frowned again. "Oh. All right then, when do we leave?"
C'rin shrugged. "Might as well stay for a sevenday or two, until your friend recovers."
Yes, especially as she'll be going with you. Rigelth added.
"This is all your fault."
Tialdusk glared at his other half. "My fault? It was your idea to stab her, not mine."
"But you're the one who decided to go through the portal!"
"Oh, shut up."
Someone coughed politely from behind them. "Excuse me-"
"No." They both said crossly as they turned to see who it was. The blonde-haired man standing behind them blinked, confused.
"Are you two interested in bonding a dragon?" The man asked.
"A what?" They said, and a dark blue dragon emerged, standing behind the blonde man.
"A dragon, like Aavaanaath here." The man said, stroking the dragon's head. "You see, there's a clutch at Darkling Dawn Weyr, and we need two more male candidates. And, well, Aavaanaath said he thought the two of you could Impress, so..."
"Really?" Tialdusk glanced at his other half. "Hey, Taisser, how much damage do you think we could wreak with dragons?"
"Oh, what's the fun in that? I prefer to just kill people myself." Taisser paused for a moment, then shrugged. "Ah well. The more, the merrier, I guess."
The dragon and his rider just stared at the former demons. The man glanced at his dragon.
Aavaanaath, are you sure about these two?
On second thought, perhaps they shouldn't stand at Darkling Dawn after all. Go ahead and search them anyway, G'vin. We'll drop them off at Sanrix Azon and Arx Atra Mons. They'd probably prefer those types of dragons, anyway.
Glancing at his dragon somewhat anxiously, G'vin sighed. "All right. Hop on, you two."
