Tuttosport 10/05/99

If the season were to end today, this would be the European situation:

Champions League 1. Lazio
2. Milan
3. Parma
4. Fiorentina

UEFA Cup 1. Udinese
2. Winner Roma-Juventus
3. Winner Inter-Bologna

Intertoto 1. Loser Roma-Juventus
2. Loser Inter-Bologna

Carlo Ancelotti admits that the situtation now is serious and that it worries him. Today, Juve's management will discuss the team's future. Luciano Moggi, Antonio Giraudo, and Roberto Bettega will meet this week Alessandro Del Piero's agents to discuss the player's contract: a solution is not expected before the end of the month. In any case, Juve will prepare two plans for this summer's transfer market: one including Del Piero and the other if Alex leaves.

DEFENSE: Alessandro Birindelli and Ciro Ferrara will be short-listed. Both Mark Iuliano and Paolo Montero's futures are in doubt. Juve is watching Cafu [Roma], Carlos Gamarra [Corinthians], Felipe [Vasco da Gama], Lilian Thuram [Parma], Fabio Cannavaro [Parma], Roberto Carlos [Real Madrid], Martin Djetou [Monaco], Pasquale Padalino [Fiorentina], and Marcel Desailly [Chelsea]. Both Thuram and Cannavaro are considered by Tuttosport "a dream". Meanwhile, 26-year old Padalino is asking Lit 3 billion (1.5 million; $1.8 million) per season and his release clause is just a bit over Lit 6 billion (3 million; $3.6 million).

MIDFIELD: Didier Deschamps will either go to Athletic Bilbao or Monaco. Jocelyn Blanchard and Simone Perrotta are also expected to leave. Juve will send someone this week in Spain for the following players: Flavio Conceiao [Deportivo La Corua], Clarence Seedorf [Real Madrid], and Christian Karembeu [Real Madrid]. It's no big secret that Real Madrid is interested in Zinedine Zidane, so a deal is possible with the Spanish team. Jonathan Bachini [Udinese] and Dino Baggio [Parma] are other names connected with Juve.

ATTACK: Daniel Fonseca and Nicola Amoruso are expected to leave. Juan Eduardo Esnaider will remain if he agrees to start from the bench. Targets: Darko Kovacevic [Real Sociedad], Pedrag Mijatovic [Real Madrid], and Roberto Muzzi [Cagliari]. There is diminished interest in Claudio Lopez [Valencia] and Hernan Crespo [Parma].

Against Bari, Juventus will be without injured Ciro Ferrara, Zidane, Del Piero, Esnaider, and suspended Mark Iuliano, Didier Deschamps, and Filippo Inzaghi.

Ferrara felt a pinch during warm-ups yesterday, but was fielded, so his injury became more serious: a sprain to his left adductor. Deschamps and Inzaghi, both warned, received a yellow card yesterday and will thus be suspended.
