By Chris Endean ROME, Oct 31 (Reuters) - After the break, Juventus lifted their game but were denied by some amazing luck. In the 46th minute, Filippo Inzaghi hit the post. The ball fell to Edgar Davids but his shot also struck the upright.

In the 63rd minute, Pietro Vierchowod cleared Uruguayan Paolo Montero's header off the line. Seven minutes later, a post again prevented Davids marking his return from a serious eye operation with a goal.

Piacenza's luck finally ran out in the 76th minute. Giovanni Stroppa pulled down Alessandro Birindelli and Del Piero converted the penalty for a deserved Juventus victory.

Roma made the perfect start at home to Cagliari as Vincenzo Montella volleyed home Cafu's freekick inside two minutes. Oliveira levelled the scores in the 15th minute, but when Brazilian Antonio Zago restored Roma's lead just before half-time and Oliveira was sent off for dissent in the 72nd, the home side looked like coasting to victory.

But with five minutes remaining, goalkeeper Francesco Antonioli was forced to haul down Mboma. The Cameroon international converted the penalty himself. Roma coach Fabio Capello described himself as "embittered", a sentiment echoed by his Milan counterpart Alberto Zaccheroni.

AC Milan never looked like scoring at Verona and would have lost their unbeaten record if Brazilian striker Adailton had converted a series of first-half chances.
