Inzaghi Inspires Juventus to 5-2 UEFA Cup Win
NICOSIA, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Striker Filippo Inzaghi claimed
two goals on Thursday as Juventus crushed Cypriot hosts Omonia
Nicosia 5-2 in their UEFA Cup first round, first leg encounter.
The Italians, European champions in 1996 and looking to lift
the UEFA trophy for the fourth time, eased off after going 4-0
up after 24 minutes.
Inzaghi opened his account from close range after two
minutes and added a second 15 minutes later.
A header from Darko Kovacevic made it 3-0 before Juan
Esnaider killed off the game with a free-kick, allowing the
visitors to sit back and resort to possession football.
Omonia's first chances came in the second half but both were
wasted by German striker Rainer Rauffmann.
Omonia coach Dusan Gallis, however, gave the 16,000 home
fans something to cheer by bringing on Lefteris Kondolefteros
with 17 minutes remaining.
He scored twice, sandwiching an 82nd-minute strike by
Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero, who was brought on for
the second half to continue his rehabilitation following injury.
