TURIN, Italy, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Juventus midfielder Edgar Davids may need eye surgery for a condition which appears more serious than orginally thought.

The Dutch international started using special drops earlier this month after being diagnosed with temporary glaucoma but his condition has not improved, his team doctor Riccardo Agricola was quoted as saying.

``His eye has not responded to the treatment,'' Agricola told the Gazzetta dello Sport daily.

``So we've decided to begin treatment with another kind of drops which must be followed for eight days.''

Asked if surgery would be needed if the treatment did not work, Agricola said: ``We can't exclude it, but to do laser surgery his eye must be stable and right now it is not.''

Davids, a pillar of the Juve midfield for the past two seasons, is wearing protective glasses to work out with team mates but is unable to play in matches.

He will miss Juve's second leg Intertoto Cup tie with French side Rennes next week. Juve won the first leg 2-0.

Even if he avoids surgery, it is not clear whether Davids will be fit for the start of the Serie A season on August 29.
