CHATILLON, Italy (August 9, 1999 2:59 p.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com) - Juventus's Dutch
international midfielder Edgar Davids may sit out Tuesday's
Intertoto Cup match against French club Rennes because of a
doping scare sparked by eye drops.
Davids has been prescribed two types of drops to cure a
temporary glaucoma which has impaired his vision.
One of the treatments is a diuretic requiring clearance from
the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) which oversees doping
controls in Italian soccer.
Juventus doctor Riccardo Agricola said at the side's
training camp in the Italian Alps on Monday that the club had
asked CONI for dispensation to use the drug and was still
awaiting a response.
A CONI spokesman said he knew of no such request.
"We haven't heard anything about this from Juventus. We're
still waiting for a precise medical description of the drug
which will then have to be put to CONI's medical experts.
"This isn't the sort of thing that can be sorted out in a
matter of seconds."
Juventus must win its final against Rennes to seal a place
in this season's UEFA Cup competition.
