Report: Atletico Madrid Wants Del Piero

TURIN, Italy (April 6, 1999 11:39 a.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com) - Atletico Madrid have offered Italy's Alessandro Del Piero 70 billion lire ($41 million) to join them from Juventus, Tuttosport newspaper reported on Tuesday.
The Turin-based paper said Miguel Angel Gil, son of Atletico President Jesus Gil, had agreed a five-year contract with Del Piero's agents which would guarantee the player an annual salary of 14 billion lire ($8.2 million) from 2000-2005.
Del Piero's contract with Juventus expires in June 2000.
The Italian striker had a superb season with Juventus last year but had a poor World Cup and has missed most of this season with a knee injury.
He said recently he was prepared to pledge himself to Juventus for life.
