COPENHAGEN (March 27, 1999 6:25 p.m. EST http://www.sportserver.com) - Italy beat Denmark 2-1 with goals from Juventus teammates Filippo Inzaghi and Antonio Conte to keep the European qualifying group one lead Saturday with a maximum points haul of nine points from three matches.

Denmark had a nightmare start to the game when debutant Jesper Groenkjaer's first-ever touch in international soccer in the first minute was a weak back-pass to goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel allowing Inzaghi to latch on to the loose ball and round the Manchester United keeper to score.

Denmark was rewarded for some good play in the opening stages of the second half when Ebbe Sand equalized with a 58th minute rebound from close range after substitute Miklos Molnar headed against the post.

But Conte headed home the winner from close range 12 minutes later -- perhaps a lucky omen for Juventus who play Manchester United in the European Cup semifinal next month.

Italy stayed atop the group with nine points from three matches while defeat almost certainly spelled the end of the road for the Danes who only have two points from their four games so far.
