MIDDLESBROUGH, England (March 4, 1999 2:54 p.m. EST http://www.sportserver.com) - Robbie O'Brien has signed a five-year deal with Italian champions Juventus after being told he had no future at Middlesbrough.

The former Ireland under-18 winger never played in the Middlesbrough first team and was released by the club some months ago with his contract paid up.

He signed for Juventus after the Italians watched him play for Ireland following a recommendation by England international Paul Merson.

Merson moved from Middlesbrough to Aston Villa this season and recommended O'Brien to his agent Steve Kutner, who has close links with the Italian club scene.

No contract details were given but Kutner said on Thursday that Juventus had made a "very good offer."

"I did not get a chance with Middlesbrough," said O'Brien, now 20. "Bryan Robson does not like young players. He prefers experienced players. I would have signed a new contract."

Robson, whose side is currently 13th in the league, denied the accusation and said he had not hesitated to introduce talented youngsters to the premier league.

"I want kids who can get in the first team, stay there and become seasoned professionals," he said.

"I don't think O'Brien is good enough but I wish him well and hope he proves me wrong. I back my coaching staff and stand by my own record. No one has made it into the top flight after being released by the club."
