Juve's Uruguayan Defender Sets Serie A Expulsion Mark
January 07, 1999 03:25 PM

MILAN, Italy (AP) -- Paolo Montero sees red more than any other Italian League player in history. By bending over to slap down a potentially dangerous through-ball in the 61st minute of a 1-1 draw at AC Milan Sunday night, Juventus of Turin's Uruguayan defender "earned" the 12th red card of his Serie A career, a new record.

The previous mark of 11 expulsions was held by Giuseppe Bergomi, now in his 19th year with Internazionale of Milan.

Montero, 27, is midway through his sixth Serie A campaign. He spent three with Atalanta of Bergamo before moving to Juventus in 1996 and helping the Turin club claim the last two league titles.

His three red cards through 15 games are one shy of the single-season mark. Montero has 19 games left to add that record to his resume.
