ISTANBUL (Oct 1, 1998 - 10:08 EDT) - Portuguese international defender Manuel Dimas signed for Turkish club Fenerbahce on Thursday from Italian champions Juventus.

Anatolian news agency said Dimas, who failed to carve out a regular first team place at the Turin club, signed a three-year contract at a ceremony in Istanbul.

Club officials did not disclose the value of the deal.

Last week Fenerbahce said they had abandoned their attempt to buy the South African-born player, who had previously signed for Juventus from Benfica.

Fenerbahce executive Necdet Ersoy said the club made the signing after weighing up the purchase of Dimas or Atletico Madrid defender Toni Munoz.

"Dimas was the first choice of our coach (Joachim) Low," Ersoy said.

Fenerbahce sold Nigerian international Jay Jay Okocha to Paris Saint Germain for $17 million during the summer and have since been looking to strengthen their squad.
