LONDON (Jul 4, 1998 - 17:57 EDT) - Juventus failed in a bid to sign exciting young England striker Michael Owen before the World Cup finals, the News of the World reported.

Luciano Moggi, the Italian club's general manager was quoted in the paper as saying: "We have known about Owen for two years.

We were receiving information about him long before he emerged in English football.

"We tried to sign him before the World Cup finals."

But Liverpool of the English premier league was not interested in selling 18-year-old Owen.

"Now we know we cannot buy him," Moggi was quoted as saying.

"But it is only proper a club such as ours should have tried."

Owen scored one of the World Cup's most outstanding goals in the second round match against Argentina. England lost on penalties.
