Bayer Leverkusen 3 - Juventus 1
Tuesday 12th March 2002
Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt converted a penalty at the BayArena on Tuesday as the Bundesliga leaders sent a below-strength Juventus crashing out of the Champions' League.
Thomas Brdaric and Marko Babic were the other scorers while defender Igor Tudor was on target with a header for the visitors, who were missing injured duo Alessandro Del Piero and Lilian Thuram, plus Edgar Davids through suspension.
Butt sent Gianluigi Buffon the wrong way on 24 minutes after Dimitar Berbatov's great pass had found Brdaric, who was brought down by Cristian Zenoni.
Berbatov was in imperious form and had to be denied by Conte from close-in just before the interval.
Substitute Tudor headed home a Christian Zenoni cross on 61 minutes to level - but the stalemate did not last.
A superb free-kick from Brazilian Ze Roberto found the head of Brdaric who nodded his side back in front, before Babic rounded off the success when Juventus were left open on the counter-attack as they pressed for another equaliser.
