Key Juve Trio Could Miss Leverkusen Clash

Sunday 10th March 2002

Juventus coach Marcello Lippi will learn on Monday if injured forwards Alessandro del Piero and David Trezeguet are fit to play in Tuesday's crucial Champions' League clash with Bayer Leverkusen. Defender Lilian Thuram has already been ruled out.

Juventus gained a valuable point against Internazionale on Saturday night, drawing 2-2 at the San Siro, but the achievement was marred by injuries to key trio Thuram, Del Piero and Trezeguet.

France defender Thuram has already been ruled out of the Leverkusen clash after limping out with a thigh strain in the first half. Del Piero played the full 90 minutes but complained of a sprained ankle afterwards.

Trezeguet, meanwhile, who scored against Inter, twisted his knee in the game but could still start Tuesday's game at the BayArena.

Del Piero and Trezeguet will be tested by club doctor Riccardo Agricola on Monday morning to see whether they can travel to Germany.

Lippi is already without defender Paolo Montero for the game Juventus are desperate to win. Juventus and Leverkusen are three points behind top duo Arsenal and Deportivo La Coruna, who meet at Highbury.

If both strikers are ruled out, Lippi is expected to start with Nicola Amoruso and Marcelo Zalayeta up front. Amoruso replaced Trezeguet after 66 minutes of Saturday's game.
