Deportivo La Coruna 2 - Juventus 0
Wednesday 27th February 2002
Deportivo La Coruna overwhelmed Juventus to record an impressive 2-0 victory in a rain-soaked encounter that saw Edgar Davids sent off for the beleagured Italians.
After the stalemate in Turin last week, Depor attacked from the start and never allowed the visitors time to settle.
Lionel Scaloni fired a warning shot in the opening minutes which Buffon did well to palm away as the Spaniards passing game allowed Juve little possession.
The deadlock was broken soon after as Victor's centre picked out Diego Tristan who had evadad the attentions of Ciro Ferrara to head home from close range.
Juventus looked very uneasy and relied heavily on their defence to soak up the pressure as the Galicians pushed forward in waves.
Victor saw a free kick tipped away by Buffon, Juan Valeron hit the side netting from close range and Tristan shot straight at the keeper from close range.
Pavel Nedved registered Juve's only two shots of note in a first half that was one-way traffic.
The introduction of Davids after the break sparked some life into the Turin-based side, but the hard-working Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet rarely found the openings they required to pull the Italians level.
But their evening was to get worse. On 74 minutes Davids approached the referee to register his disagreement over a free kick and the Dutchman, who had been booked a minute earlier was shown his second yellow card.
From then on Juve were on a damage limitation exercise although there was little they could do to stop Depor substitute Djalminha from doubling the home side's lead with a neat downward header.
Trezeguet did have an opportunity to reduce the arrears when he pounced on Nourredine Naybet's mistake, but the French striker wasted the chance.
Sergio then saw his shot tipped over and Djalminha flashed a shot wide of the post before Anders Frisk brought an end to Juve's miserable evening.
