Chievo 1 - Juventus 3
Sunday 27th January 2002
Juventus stayed in touch with the Serie A leaders by chalking up their fifth win in a row against early pace-setters Chievo.
The win at Bentegodi stadium allowed Juve to complete the double over Chievo and left them three points behind leaders Roma and two off Internazionale in second.
David Trezeguet had the first chance when he was set up by Alessandro del Piero, but Cristiano Lupatelli anticipated bravely.
The deadlock was broken on 17 minutes from a corner by Pavel Nedved. Trezeguet headed toward goal, Lupatelli saved but Ciro Ferrara was on hand to score easily.
Eriberto almost levelled with a delicious lob that was turned over the bar by Gianluigi Buffon.
But Brazilian did less well when Massimo Marazzina put him through for a one-on-one which the former Bologna winger struck wide.
Juventus doubled their lead straight after the interval as defender Fabio Moro deflected the ball past Lupatelli.
Lupatelli then gave away a penalty which Del Piero failed to convert with a weak effort.
Chievo got back into the game on the hour when Massimo Marazzina's precise diagonal shot beat Buffon.
Nedved could have been sent off when he went in high on Chievo captain Maurizio D'Angelo, but the referee opted for a yellow card.
The second penalty that referee De Santis gave to the Bianconeri even less clear-cut than the first.
Moro was adjudged to have hand-balled a Nedved cross and Del Piero scored powerfully.
Near the end Chievo substitute Daniele Franceschini hit the post after being set up by Bernardo Corradi.
