Trezeguet Hopes To Be France's First Choice

PARIS (Reuters) t- Prolific Juventus striker David Trezeguet hopes to be France's undisputed first choice at centre forward at the World Cup later this year.

Joint top-scorer in Serie A on 13 goals, the 24-year-old was in the French squads for the 1998 World Cup and at Euro 2000 but played mostly as a substitute.

He scored the golden goal against Italy which made France European champions, but did not play in the World Cup final victory over Brazil in 1998.

"At Euro 2000, I scored the golden goal but I returned home frustrated," he told French daily Le Parisien on Saturday. "I did not have the impression I had taken part in the competition. I don't want it to happen again."

"It would be the third competition in which I've been stopped from expressing myself," he added.

Trezeguet, who has scored 17 goals in 33 appearances for France, lost out to Stephane Guivarc'h and Christophe Dugarry at the World Cup and to Thierry Henry and Nicolas Anelka at Euro 2000.

"For France's last three games, I was the first choice striker," he told the paper. "I always try to make it a tricky choice for (France manager) Roger Lemerre. Before, Henry was his first choice, now it's the two of us."

Trezeguet said that there was one team he would like to play against above all at the finals -- Argentina, the country in which he was raised.

"I never played against Argentina. That's a match I would really like to play if I'm given the chance," he said.
