Juventus 4 - Atalanta 2
Thursday 10th January 2002
Reserve striker Nicola Amoruso scored a hat-trick as Juventus raced to a 4-2 first leg quarter final lead in the Italian Cup on Wednesday night.
Juventus manager Marcello Lippi showed that he is taking the Cup seriously by fielding a strong side.
However, it was Atalanta who started the brighter and took the lead after 13 minutes when Corrado Colombo scored with a sublime overhead kick.
Juventus were level two minutes later as Pavel Nedved fed Amoruso, who raced past Davide Pinato and scored with a powerful right foot shot.
Christian Zenoni was then moved into midfield to break down a solid Atalanta, who were playing with five men across midfield.
But they had to wait until the 58th minute before they went ahead, Amoruso scoring after latching on to Enzo Maresca's assist.
Marcelo Zalayeta scored Juve's third eight minutes later, capitalising on good work from Gianluca Zambrotta.
Daniele Berretta pulled one back for the visitors after a back-heel from Colombo had put him through but Amoruso completed his hat-trick seven minutes before the end by converting a penalty.
Colombo completed Atalanta's misery be being sent off late on.
