Lazio 1 - Juventus 0
Saturday 24th November 2001
Lazio were worthy winners in the big Saturday night game after a goal by Fabio Liverani continued the Rome club's revival under coach Alberto Zaccheroni.
The win lifted Lazio to fourth spot in Serie A, ahead of Juventus on goal difference and a far cry from the troubles they found themselves in early season.
Lazio beat Juve to the signing of Liverani in the summer and the play-maker made the Turin giants pay for their failure to move quicker in the transfer market.
Liverani capitalised on a mistake by Juventus midfielder Alessio Tacchinardi, who fluffed a back pass to goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.
Buffon had to chase out of his goal to head clear from Lazio striker Simone Inzaghi, but Liverani reacted the quickest and lobbed the ball home from 30 yards early in the second half.
Lazio also hit the woodwork twice through Inzaghi and Hernan Crespo and Juventus lacked penetration through out with Alex Del Piero and former Lazio star Pavel Nedved showing little.
There could be more trouble for coach Marcello Lippi if TV evidence finds striker David Trezeguet guilty of head butting Lazio's Portugal defender Fernando Couto.
