Disappointed Moggi Refuses To Panic
Saturday 24th November 2001
Juventus chief executive Luciano Moggi ruled out further forays into the transfer market after the Turin giants slumped to a disappointing defeat at Lazio. "We will not buy other players even if we have to play nine matches in a row," he declared.
Heavy spending in the transfer market on the likes of Gianluigi Buffon, Pavel Nedved and Lillian Thuram have failed to pay dividends for Juventus so far this season.
Saturday's defeat was their second in Serie A, leaving Juve with just four wins from their opening 11 games.
"We also made another mistake and we paid as usual," said coach Marcello Lippi. "We have to work hard, but we don't need new players."
Lazio's winner by Fabio Liverani followed a mistake by Juventus midfielder Alessio Tacchinardi, who fluffed a back pass to goalkeeper Buffon.
Moggi added: "We lost because we made a mistake not for the first time this season. But we didn't react and Lazio deserved to win."
The victory marked the continued rival of Lazio under former AC Milan coach Alberto Zaccheroni.
