Fog Forces Postponement Of Juve-Bayer Champions League Tie

TURIN, Italy, Nov 21 (AFP) - The Champions League match between Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen was postponed here Wednesday after thick fog enveloped the Delle Alpi stadium. Swiss referee Urs Meier ruled the game could not go ahead after a pitch inspection with visibility down to barely 20 metres.

The UEFA match delegate suggested the Group D second phase match would be played next Wednesday.

Leverkusen's general manager Reiner Calmund said the postponement was understandable.

"The game could only have gone ahead under irregular sporting conditions. You couldn't see as far as one goalmouth to the other. You couldn't expect the teams to go out and play in those circumstances."

Calmund confirmed that both clubs and UEFA were agreed in principle on the match going ahead next Wednesday at the same time (1945 GMT).

That would mean the postponement of Bayer's domestic tie a day earlier at second division VfL Bochum, which will now take place on December 12.
