Juventus 1 - Rosenborg 0
Wednesday 17th October 2001
A David Trezeguet header on 25 minutes of a cross from strike partner Alessandro Del Piero was all Juventus needed to move top of Group E on Wednesday as Rosenborg's Champions' League hopes ended in defeat.
It was Juve's first win in five games in Serie A and the Champions' League, the Turin side's last taste of victory coming in their controversial 3-2 defeat of Celtic on September 18.
Trezeguet had a second chance just minutes later but his header off a cross from Gianluca Zambrotta crashed off the bar.
The France striker then had the ball in the back of the net three minutes before the break but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The 1-0 scoreline belied Juve's superiority as Rosenborg keeper Arne Gautur Arason kept Marcello Lippi's side at bay.
Enzo Maresca came in for Alessio Tacchinardi who had fallen ill that afternoon and Lippi chose to play with Liliam Thuram on the right side of defence as he does for France.
Juve tried to erase memories of last Sunday's second-half capitulation against Torino with an explosive start after the break.
Enzo Maresca came close with a shot from distance before a strike from Trezeguet was charged down.
Del Piero, the driving force of the Juve side, was denied by Arason on 73 minutes off Pavel Nedved's cross.
Rosenborg's best chance of the night fell to defender Christer Basma who was denied by a brilliant save from Gianluigi Buffon with seven minutes to go.
Victory leaves Juventus top on eight points, one clear of Porto who beat Celtic 3-0.
