Juve Crumble In Turin Derby
Sunday 14th October 2001
The expensively assembled Juventus defence continues to creak as the bianconeri squandered a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Torino in a thrilling Turin derby on Sunday.
Italy star Alessandro Del Piero was in sparkling form at the Stadio Delle Alpi as Juventus went 3-0 up within the first 25 minutes. Del Piero netted the first on ten minutes, before Croatian defender Igor Tudor doubled the home team's lead two minutes later.
Del Piero looked to have settled the contest with his second goal on 25 minutes, but Torino had other ideas. The newly-promoted team gave themselves hope when the former Lecce striker Christiano Lucarelli pulled one goal back in the 57th minute.
Marco Ferrante made it 3-2 when he converted a penalty in the 70th minute, and Torino's comeback was completed in the 83rd minute as Riccardo Maspero forced the ball home.
Juventus were gifted a golden opportunity to take the points when referee Salvatore Borriello awarded them a penalty for Maspero's foul on Tudor in the 88th minute, but Chilean striker Marcelo Salas - on as a substitute for Del Piero - fired wide.
Chievo were head twice at Brescia, but in the end they had to settle for a share of the spoils and the game finished 2-2.
Massimo Marazzina continued his impressive scoring run when he gave the visitors the lead in the tenth minute, but Brescia levelled courtesy of Robert Baggio's penalty on the hour mark.
The game came to life in the latter stages when Chievo retook the lead through Federico Cossato in the 80th minute, only for Brescia's Sussi to restore parity a minute later.
Venezia's stand-in coach Claudio Iachini enjoyed a memorable debut at the San Siro as his team held AC Milan to a 1-1 draw.
Ukraine star Andriy Shevchenko fired the home team ahead on the stroke of half-time, but the visitors refused to give up and were rewarded with an equaliser when former Milan player Pippo Maniero forced the ball home in the 61st minute.
Lecce ran out 4-1 winners over Fiorentina in a heated game at the Via del Mare.
The home team took an early two-goal lead with strikes from Davor Vugrinec and Guillermo Giacomazzi, only for Yugoslav star Predrag Mijatovic to pull a goal back in the 13th minute.
Fiorentina, though, were dealt a major blow when goalkeeper Giuseppe Taglialatela was shown the red card in the 66th minute.
Viola boss Roberto Mancini opted to sacrifice Mijatovic for reserve keeper Alaex Manninger, and the visitors found themselves chasing the game.
There were two more sendings off in the 81st minute as Lecce's Luigi Piangerelli and Fiorentina's Domenico Morfeo were both given their marching orders following an ugly altercation.
Nine-man Fiorentina could not keep Lecce at bay in the last few minutes as the home side secured the points when Vugrinec scored his second of the game Ernesto Javier Chevanton also got on the scoresheet.
A late goal from French defender Martin Djetou earned Parma a point after a 2-2 draw with Piacenza at the Ennio Tardini.
Italy international Marco Di Vaio gave Parma the lead in the 42nd minute before the former Brescia star Dario Hubner turned the match on its head with goals after 50 and 72 minutes. Piacenza defended stubbornly, but could not keep Parma out.
Finally, Bologna continued their excellent form this season with a 1-0 win at Verona thanks to Salvatore Fresi's first-half strike.
Internazionale looked set to extend their lead at the top to three points when Nicola Ventola opened the scoring against Udinese in the 61st minute in the Stadio Friuli on Sunday evening.
But a late strike from Davide di Michele earned Roy Hodgson's team a share of the spoils and took some of the pressure off the under-fire coach.
