Porto 0 - Juventus 0
Wednesday 10th October 2001
A disappointing goalless draw between Porto and Juventus at the Stadium das Antas in Oporto saw Celtic go top of Champions' League Group E on Wednesday night.
The home side started in optimistic fashion, pressurising the Italians all over the pitch. And they could have taken the lead after six minutes when Ibarra's long pass slipped under Pessoto's foot and gave Nuno Capucho a clear run forward.
The Portuguese winger entered the penalty area but hesitated before shooting harmlessly wide. In the next minute Capucho missed another clear chance heading wide of Gianluigi Buffon's left post after a perfect cross from Ibarra.
Porto continued to pour forward and again went close in the 16th minute. Clayton pounced on a Lilian Thuram error and raced towards goal before passing Pena, who forced Buffon into making a phenomenal save.
Juventus were remarkably quiet in the first half and did not have a single shot on goal.
Deco, meanwhile, tested Buffon with a low shot but the Italian keeper was equal to every challenge.
The Italians did, however, create the best chance of the game a minute after the break from their first corner. Paolo Montero's header found Marcelo Salas alone under the crossbar but instead of finishing it off, the Chilean gently touched the ball to Ovchinokov.
Del Piero's then drove a free kick inches wide the left post. Pena had another chance soon afterwards but he headed Hugo Ibarra's cross wide.
Porto had the last chance to win the game in the 71st minute when substitute Helder Postiga collected a Capucho pass in the box but Buffon against denied the home team with an agile save.
